The Journey of Digitization: Technology's
Role in Education
The chalk and talk method which
dominated education sector for a very long time is transforming into the buzzing
sound of keyboards and glittery screens. Technology which was seen as a
distraction for learning has now become the most powerful tool to learn and teach.
Education today is not confined
to the four walls of classroom. Technology has made learning vibrant with
virtual reality making some of the history classes real time and scientific
research more visual. You can see DNA coding and tiniest of bacteria, thanks to
technology. Today, technology has broken down all the impossibilities that
barred learning in the past. The tutor being the source of all knowledge is now
a thing of the past. Education in the past centered around a tutor and learning
was totally dependent on that person. Technology today eased the work of the
teachers. With Youtube hosting so many videos, Artificial intelligence solving
biggest of equations, and internet holding millions of data, learning has
become so much easier and fun.
The possibility of Interactive
simulations brings dry concepts to life, gamified exercises transform learning
into a thrilling adventure, and collaborative tools like nearpod bridge
geographical and physical divides, helping learners have a vibrant learning
community.
The usage of videos for lesson
sharing can also prove to be expensive. It can, if not controlled and kept
under check, cause screen addiction and push learners away from critical and
creative thinking. The information that is available on internet can overwhelm a
learner. Misinformation and disinformation are one of the many visible problems
we have today due to technology.
To curb the issue of learners
getting misinformed, digital literacy is very important. The educational institutions
should have digital literacy as one of the compulsory modules. If learners and
educators are not digitally literate, it can change how human think and work.
We need to understand that Technology is a tool and its effectiveness depends
on the hands that wield it. We need to have that human touch and not let technology
take over our capacity to reason and think.
Today students use AI to even
make choices. I have seen the, using AI to choose from the choices provided to
them. We have become so dependent that we sometimes doubt our won choices. Do
you want to be controlled or do you want to be the controller? We have to think
about it.
Another factor to consider would
be the ever-evolving landscape of technological tools. The educators will be
grappling with constant learning curves to keep up with the pace of
technological progress. It might burden the tutors and they might not focus on
content.
I feel that technology should not
and will not replace teachers, but enhance their abilities and skills to impart
their knowledge. It should narrow the learning gaps and facilitate better understanding
and learning.
The future of education that I see
do not lie in total embrace of technology but a harmonious blend of human and digital
tools. I see a class with human learners learning under a human teacher using
technology to harness and mold the humans.
